This town was founded in the 17th century and became a great mining center (the name "Ouro Preto" means "Black Gold" in Portuguese), but the mining was of precious and semi-precious stones. There are 21 major Baroque-style churches in the town, many of them heavily decorated in gold. Besides the beautiful colonial architecture, Ouro Preto is famous for its verdant countryside, waterfalls and wonderful cuisine. It is the perfect place to RELAX. |  |
